On 18 May 2026, Prof. Dr Kamaran Younis Mohammed Amin, President of Salahaddin University-Erbil, in the presence of Dr Chnar Saad, Deputy Head of the Erbil Organising Bureau of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Dr Amanj Bradosti, Head of Zanko District (KDP), Zahir Zahir, Head of Qallat Branch, as well as all college deans, directors, heads of departments and academic staff, officially launched the project for planting 3,000 trees and ornamental plants throughout the University’s colleges and directorates.
The University has initiated a national campaign aimed at addressing climate change and increasing green spaces across its campuses.
The project has been scientifically designed, with special types of trees and plants selected to suit the environment of the Kurdistan Region, including sissoo trees and baby rose flowers. The initiative aims to create a healthy, shaded and aesthetically organised campus environment for students and academic staff.
The campaign was launched upon the recommendation of the President of the University with the objective of making the campus greener.
The project covers all colleges, departments and directorates of Salahaddin University-Erbil and includes the planting of 3,000 ornamental plants and trees.
Most of the selected trees are sissoo trees, which are known for their rapid growth and broad shade. These trees are resistant to heat and drought and require relatively little water.
In addition, baby rose flowers will also be planted to enhance the beauty of the gardens. These colourful flowers, available in red, white, yellow and pink, require direct sunlight and moderate watering.
