Mr Irfan Shaban Asaad, a PhD candidate in the Department of Earth and Petroleum Sciences at the College of Science, Salahaddin University-Erbil, has succeeded, as part of his doctoral research project, in identifying a geological event dating back approximately 183 million years for the first time in Iraq.
The event is known as the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event (T-OAE) and was recorded within the geological formations of the Sehkaniyan Formation in the Sirwan Valley, located in Halabja Governorate.
The findings of this research were published in the prestigious journal Geological Journal.
It is worth noting that the researcher conducted the practical component of his doctoral project at the University of Zielona Góra, Poland, as a result of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between Salahaddin University-Erbil and the aforementioned university, with the direct support of Prof. Dr Kamaran Younis M. Amin, President of Salahaddin University-Erbil.
The project is being supervised by Prof. Dr Mohammed Fakhri and Prof. Dr Sardar Balaky.
