Attended by the members of the high semester planning committee and a number of university instructors, a seminar was presented by Prof. Dr. Abbas Burhan on how to develop students’ capacity and range of activities within the new education system. In the seminar, the student-centred approach in teaching was emphasised in which the student is in the centre of learning and the teacher is a mere facilitator.
Also in the seminar, they discussed the system which entails group work and projects from the students, and their activities organized in a manner which involves daily class discussions.
The system is planned to be put into process next academic year. A significant part of the system is to take into account the students’ thoughts and viewpoints, whose assessment does not solely rely on examination but alternative methods of assessment to show their real capacity. Dr. Abbas Burhan also highlighted the new methods of teaching; the studies have shown that group work activities are more effective.
Therefore, the activities should be various and different; among which they should include workshops, report writing, research and seminar.
