In a ceremony, Syriac Language Department was inaugurated in the College of Education at SU. The representative of Ministry of Higher Education, representative of Ministry of Education, SU president, an SU vice-president, Director of Ankawa District, a number of KRG parliament members and university instructors were present in the ceremony. It is the first time in KRG and Iraq a department is established which is committed to studying Syriac language, culture and literature as a special constituent of Kurdistan Region.
The purpose behind opening the department at SU is to foster coexistence and mutual respect. As a first step, 20 students are admitted to study in the first year. SU president mentioned that in the following year, this number will be increased and other ethnicities will be admitted to study at the department in order to support intercultural communication and learning about new cultures. Also, head of the new department announced that next year international students will be admitted.
