Salahaddin University commemorated the annual University Martyrs Day. The ceremony was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Higher Education, Ministry of Martyrs and Anfal Affairs, Salahaddin University President and University teachers and students. Speeches were delivered by Dr. Ahmed Anwar Dezaye, the President of Salahaddin University and Mr. Baravan Hamdi, Director General in the Ministry of Martyrs and Anfal Affairs. Salahaddin University President mentioned that the Baathist crimes against Kurdistan were not limited to physical destruction but also included crimes against reason and science and the Kurdistan culture. The aims of these crimes were to restrict development and progress in Kurdistan. However, we now witness the impressive development of higher education in Kurdistan. Dr. Idris Hadi delivered a speech as a witness of the event as he was Sulaimani University student during the bombardment of the university in Qaladeze. He talked about the Baaathist attack on the city and the University. The ceremony included other activities such as poetry reading and documentary film presentation. A representative of the University teachers proposed to commemorate the next year's Martyrs Day jointly with Rapareen University on the graveyard of the martyrs. The proposal was accepted by the University President. It is worth mentioning that 41 years ago at 9:45am on 24th April 1974 around 4-6 Russian made warplanes carrying 500 tons of Indian made Napalm, bombed Qaladeze, killing 132 civilians and students of Sulaimani University and injured 350 people.
