SU and Erbil
Salahaddin University – Erbil (http://www.su.edu.krd) is located in the capital of Kurdistan Region of Iraq, Erbil (Hawler in Kurdish), established in July 1981 and considered as one of the oldest and largest institutions of higher learning in Kurdistan Region. It is a comprehensive university with over 78 scientific departments (over 25,000 undergraduate students, 1,000 Master and Ph.D.students and about 2150 academic staff).
The University is a member of the International Association of Universities, the association of Arab Countries Universities and Francophone Universities. SU awards various academic degrees and certificates to qualified individuals, including Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.), Master of Arts (M.A.), Master of Science (M.Sc.), and Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D.).
The diplomas and certificates awarded by SU are internationally recognized. The languages of teaching and research are Kurdish, Arabic and English.
Hawler (Erbil) is the fourth largest city in Iraq after Baghdad, Basra and Mosul lie eighty kilometers east of Mosul( Ninewa). Life in Erbil can be dated back to at least 6000 BC, and it is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. At the heart of the city is the ancient Citadel of Erbil.
The geographical coordinates of Erbil are 36.2oN Latitude, 44.0oE Longitude and 420 meters above mean sea level.
The city has been under the rule of many regional powers since that time, including the Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Arabs, and Ottomans.
The city's archaeological museum houses a large collection of pre-Islamic artifacts and is a center for archaeological projects in the area.
The Climate
The climate of Hawler (Erbil) follows the Mediterranean climate and is affected by cyclones and anticyclones developing on the Mediterranean Sea basin during the winter and summer months, respectively. It has been classified as a semi-arid continental climate, that is cold and wet in winter, hot and dry in summer. Spring and autumn are short seasons but pleasant. Long-term average annual rainfall is over 400mm. The rainy season usually starts in mid-October and lasts until late May. December and January are the coldest, whilst July and August months are the hottest.
