What is Erasmus+?
Erasmus+ is the European Union programme for education, training, youth and sport. It runs for seven years, from 2014 to 2020, with organizations invited to apply for funding each year to undertake creative and worthwhile activities.
Origins of the Name
The Erasmus Programme is a backronym meaning (European Community Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students) is a European Union (EU) student exchange programme established in 1987. Erasmus+, or Erasmus Plus, is the new programme combining all the EU's current schemes for education, training, youth and sport, which was started in January 2014.
The programme is named after the Dutch philosopher, theologian, Renaissance Humanist, monk, and devout Roman Catholic, Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam, called "the crowning glory of the Christian humanists”.
Erasmus+ (2014-2020) aims to modernize education, training, youth work and capacity building in higher education institutions all over the world. It is open to education, training, youth and sport organizations across all sectors of lifelong learning, including school education, further and higher education, adult education and the youth sector.
Erasmus+ provides grants for a wide range of actions including the opportunity for students to undertake work placements abroad and for teachers and educational staff to attend training courses.
Erasmus + mainly consist of two key actions
Erasmus + Key Action1 (ICM) International Credit Mobility provides a unique opportunity for teachers, headmasters, trainers and other staff of education institutions to participate in international training courses in different European countries. The partner countries institutions can apply to receive the grant to send their staff members abroad for training.
Erasmus+ Key Action 2 Capacity building in Higher education institutions. This action is mainly concerned with developing, improving and upgrading higher education institutions teaching and research programmes such as curriculum development, internationalization of universities, application of Bologna system, renewable energy systems utilizations, e-learning modern methodologies in education, ..etc.
Salahaddin University and Erasmus Programme
Since the year 2012, Salahaddin university-Erbil has been involving in the European Union programme of Erasmus.
The first programme was Erasmus Mundus SALAM Action 2 Lot 7 (2013 2437/001-001/EMA2), coordinated by University of Warsaw in the period October 2012 to May 2015.In this programme 5 BA students, 2 MA students, 1 Ph.D student and 2 post doctorate and 1 academic staff have joined European universities and completed their studies and came back to SU participating in teaching and research, transferring EU modern mythologies and technologies in higher education system to SU.
The second programme is Erasmus + Key Action2-GeoNetc (561967-EPP-1-2015-1-DE-EPPKA2-CBHE-EP), International MSc Educational program in Environmental Management and Modelling. coordinated by Lund university-Sweden started from October 2015 and continues until October 2018. This programme is concerned with developing curriculum and course books of some 13 online modules leading to MSc degree.
The third programme Erasmus + Key Action 2-OPATEL (573915-EPP-1-2016-1-DE-EPPKA2-CBHE-JP), Online platform for Academic TEaching and Learning in Iraq and Iran. coordinated by Leipzig university of Applied Science-Germany started from October 2016 and continues until October 201. The aim of this programme is to establish and application of e-learning methodology and technology in teaching and research processes on education in higher education institutions.
The fourth programme is Erasmus+ Key Action 2- TIGRIS (586290-EPP-1-2017-1-DE-EPPKA2-CBHE-SP) ,Transfer of Good IR Practices & Reinforcement of Internationalization Strategies in Kurdistan, coordinated Georg August Gottingen University-Germany started from October 2017 and continues until October 2020.The objective of this programme is to internationalize Kurdistan Region Universities and raise the level of education to international standards.
The fifth programme is Erasmus+ Key Action 107- ICM coordinated by Ondokuz Mayis University (OMU), Samsun-Turky started from October 2017 and renewable every year on wards. The aim of this programme is International Credit Mobility, that is teaching and training undergraduate, postgraduate and academic staff in host University. So far 4 Master degree students have been nominated to join OMU for the period of 5 months each.
The Sixth programme is Erasmus+ Key Action 107-ICM coordinated by University of Warsaw (UW) -Poland from October 2017 and renewable each year. So far one SU academic staff has participated in one staff week workshop program at UW in the period 4-8 June 2018 with 23 universities representatives all over the world. From September 2018 to February 2019, 3 Ph.D. students from SU will join University of Warsaw for the period of 5 months to conduct a part of their Ph.D. thesis in the fields of Medical Physics, Archaeology and English language.
In February 2018, Salahaddin University with cooperation of its partners in Europe and in Kurdistan Region-Iraq has submitted another 6 proposals to the European’s Erasmus + in variety of fields. It is hoped and looks forward for the approvals of EU commission.
