About

Salahaddin University-Erbil (SU) [ www.su.edu.krd ] is located in the capital of Kurdistan Region , Erbil (Hawler in Kurdish), and is one of the oldest and largest institutions of higher learning in the Kurdistan Region.

Salahaddin University was established in 1968 and was originally based in Sulaimaniyah, before being transferred to Erbil in 1981 for political reasons. Subsequently, the name was also changed to Salahaddin, in honor of the great Kurdish leader Salahaddin Al-Ayubi.

Initially, the university included seven colleges: Science, Agriculture, Engineering, Administration, Arts, Education, and Medicine. Later, in 1985, the College of Law and Politics was added to the University's programmes while the College of Dentistry was added in 1995.

The total number of colleges became 22 in 2004, then decreased to 18 in 2005 when the Colleges of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, and Pharmacy became part of Hawler Medical University. And finally decreased to 14 in 2010 when the four colleges in Soran district became a part of Soran University. In 2012, then reduced to 12 colleges because the two colleges of Education are combined and the evening college is closed. In the year 2012 ,college of Basic Education evening attendance was established. In the year 2014 two new colleges were established in Shaqlawa tourist town and named as College of Education at Shaqlawa and  College of Education at Makhmoor. By this the total number of the colleges at Salahaddin University now is 14 colleges holding 78 departments.

The University is a member of the International Association of Universities and grants various academic degrees and certificates to qualified individuals, including Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.), Master of Arts (M.A.), Master of Science (M.Sc.), and Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D.). The diplomas and certificates awarded by SU are internationally recognized.The Colleges and departments are:

  • College of Engineering; Civil, Architecture, Software, Electrical, Mechanics, Dam &water resources, Survey Chemical Eng. Departments.
  • College of Science; Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Geology, Computer Science and Environmental Science Departments.
  • College of Law and Political Science; Law and Political Science Departments.
  • College of Languages; Kurdish, Arabic, English, French, German, Turkish and Persian language Departments.
  • College of Education; Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics,  Kurdish, Arabic, English, Special Education  and Education & Psychology Departments.
  • College of Arts; Geography, History, Psychology, Media, Philosophy, Archeology, Sociology, and Social Work Departments.
  • College of Management and Economics; Economics, Statistics, Accounting, Management, Tourisim, Finance & Banking Departments.
  • College of Agricultural; Animal Production, Field Production, Plant Protection, Soil & Water,Horticulture and Forestry Departments.
  • College of Physical Education; Theoretical studies, Individual Games, and Group Games.
  • College of Islamic Science; Shareaa, Islam, and Fundamentals of Religions Departments.
  • College of Fine Arts; Cinema, Theater, Music and Plastic/Painting Departments.
  • College of Basic education (Morning & Evening) attendance; General science, Mathematics, Social Sciences, English and Kurdish , Arabic & Kindergarten Departments.
  • College of Education at Shaqlawa; Kurdish, Arabic, Physics and Biology Departments.
  • College of Education at Makhmoor; Kurdish and Arabic Departments.
  • Salahaddin University holds about 25000 students (Undergraduate+Postgraduate Students) and about 3500 administration & technical employee and about 2500 University academic staff.

    Salahaddin University looks forward to have close link and Academic/Scientific cooperation with UK universities in order to raise the level of the university to international standards. Carrying out combined researches in different fields will help the university academic to get more information on up-to-date science.

    Internationalization of Salahaddin University

    According to the Law of Higher Education in Kurdistan Region, study at SU is free for both undergraduate and postgraduate students (no tuition fees). Only pupils that graduate from high schools located within Kurdistan Region are entitled to apply to SU. The pupils must prove they are Iraqi nationals.

    The internationalization of the university can be achieved only by allowing students from all over the world to apply for study at SU, and create opportunities for international university professors to teach and research at SU.

    The Internationalization future plan of Salahaddin University is to open worldwide through Student/Academic exchange and create balance on the Curriculum and system of teaching equivalent to the International Universities.

    Salahaddin University has started accepting international underegraduate student.As the first step, in November 2016,two students from China have been enrolled at the college of Languages to study Arabic Language leading to BA degree.

    Since the year of 2012, Salahaddin University has become a full partnership of Ersmus Mundus Scholarships programme. The programme named SALAM1 and SALAM2 and coordinated by the University of Warsaw-Poland. So far about 12 students and academic staff of SU have benefited from this European programme.

    In principle, the office of international relations at Salahaddin University -Erbil has two sub-departments:

    Department of Scholarships: This department puts forward in cooperation with all the colleges linked to SUH, plans of scholarships to send graduates abroad to study in different fields of science leading to the degrees of master and Ph.D. The plans are mainly based on the need of the colleges to have more qualified academic teachers and researchers, especially in those fieldss. in which higher studies in local universities are not possible. The graduates are usually sent to English speaking countries.

    SU also sends graduates to non English speaking countries like France, Germany and Russia according to our need and special scientific agreements between KRG and these countries. The department of scholarships also looks after the students who study abroad, and follows up on their progress to provide the students with all the necessities.

    Departments of Delegations: This department is responsible for all international and local delegations visiting SU. Specifically, this concerns receiving delegations, making required arrangements for meetings, and discussing the reasons for the visit.

    Communication with local and worldwide universities and scientific research centres for the exchange of ideas and establishing bilateral scientific and cultural relations, protocols and MOU/MOA arrangements and  implementations follow up all over the world is the main duty of the office of international relations.
